Wendy Low & Lee Soon Heng are the sweetest artist couple I know. The husband joins the wife when she goes plein-air watercolour painting in the hot sun. The wife joins the husband when he visits Chinese ink painting and seal carving exhibitions.
Hence it was nice to see the couple coming together for their first joint art exhibition "Wendy Low & Lee Soon Heng: Journey with Ink & Colour 李巡兴 . 刘奕村: 墨彩交融 . 携手同进", which showcases Wendy's watercolour works and Soon Heng's Chinese ink painting and seal carvings.
They met at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts where both studied fine art. After graduating in 1990, it was the start of a life together and a journey in art together. One East and one West, but joint with the same passion, and perhaps water and paper too (as required in the mediums of watercolour and Chinese ink).
Wendy's watercolour works are charming and exquisite. She paints a lot of Singapore landscape scenes because she goes plein-air painting almost every Sunday with a group of local artists.
Her signature window series are always captivating, from the delicate details to the careful balance of light and shadow.
Soon Heng's Chinese ink paintings are always expertly executed. He has been teaching Chinese ink painting in schools for 36 years, imparting the love of ink to our younger generation.
His seal carvings are simple and yet interesting, an expression of his knowledge in Chinese calligraphy and creativity.
Seeing their works put together, one can feel a sense of connectedness, a warm feeling of family, a pure dedication for the arts.
I wish the couple eternity in their love for art, and for each other!
"Wendy Low & Lee Soon Heng: Journey with Ink & Colour 李巡兴 . 刘奕村: 墨彩交融 . 携手同进" art exhibition runs from 15 to 23 June 2024 at Blk 231 Bras Basah Complex #04-11, in Singapore.
