Every Sunday morning for over 20 years, a group of artists will gather at a coffeeshop at Blk 325 Clementi Ave 5. Led by second generation Nanyang artist Low Puay Hua, this informal group of Clementi Artists which includes senior and younger local artists, have been gathering together for more than 20 years.
While having their kopi and kaya toasts, the artists will talk about art, about painting, about life as an artist. Some of them will bring their paintings along, which they will place at the railings near the coffeeshop, for other artists to view and give their feedback.
It’s a friendly, old school, Singapore style art salon, 100% organic, ground-up grouping that welcomes other artists to join, where feedback is respectfully received and exchanges are sincere and genuine. It is really heartening to see such initiatives in Singapore!
Besides gathering at the coffeeshop, the artists also go on painting trips together, with recent trips to Penang and Tanjong Pinang in Malaysia.
This exhibition is their fifth group exhibition. Featuring 34 artists with the oldest at 91 years old and the youngest in their 30s, the exhibition showcases 67 paintings in different genres of oil, watercolour, acrylic, Chinese ink and Chinese calligraphy.
There are works by senior artists such as Chew Swee Fah,
Works by the next generation artists such as Kevin Tan,
Paintings of Clementi by artists who stay in Clementi such as Monica Chua.
The camaraderie amongst the artists and the passion for their art can be keenly felt during the exhibition. Hope the group continues to expand and spread its wings!
"Splendour of Clementi Artists 金泰艺彩" runs from 28 to 31 March 2024 at The Art House in Singapore.
