Poon Keng Cheong 潘镜祥 graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1975. He became a full-time artist after his retirement, having worked as a civil servant for nearly 40 years.
“Poon Keng Cheong Solo Exhibition: Time Zone 潘镜祥个展: 驿站” is the Singapore artist's third solo exhibition.
This art exhibition is a travel diary on canvas, where Poon paints the scenes and life he saw during his extensive travels in China.
While we do not know when we can travel to China again, we can take comfort from Poon’s oil and acrylic paintings, of the Hutongs in Beijing, old towns in Fujian, and the mountains and lakes in Shandong.
“Impression of Stream Village 鲤鱼溪印象”, is an acrylic painting of a village in Fujian that has been cultivating carp in a brook that runs through the village for more than 800 years.
It is a poetic painting with the village houses, the misty sky, the reflective waters, presented in hushed and gentle hues. At 100cm by 100cm, the painting draws you deep into a quiet meditation.
“Phoenix Old Town 凤凰古镇” is another 100cm by 100cm acrylic painting. The beautiful Phoenix Ancient Town in Hunan is a UNESCO World Heritage site built in 1704.
In this painting, the old village houses with their roofs and railings are vividly presented in soothing earth tones. They may only be village houses, but here they are as grand as the imperial palace.
Poon’s time zone of his past travels in China has been idyllic and even romantic. Hopefully, we can look back at this Covid time zone in the future and feel, its not so bad after all.
“Poon Keng Cheong Solo Exhibition: Time Zone 潘镜祥个展: 驿站” art exhibition was held from 19-25 December 2021 at The Art House in Singapore.
