“0211 in Watercolour 水彩画展” is the first art exhibition at ARTualize’s new gallery space at High Street Centre.
Named 0211, after its unit number, this new space promises to be the place to start your journey in #sgart.
The inaugural exhibition is fittingly a watercolour exhibition featuring 10 #sgartists with familiar scenes of Singapore.
There is veteran artist 林辉忠 Lim Hwee Tiong’s semi abstract painting of Club Street, a sublime scene captured with mere brushstrokes and brilliant colours.
黄海 Wong Hai’s interesting long form presentation of the Singapore River, where we feel that we are cruising together with the tour boat, admiring landmarks along the way.
The crystal white that brings out the glorious morning in 陈润生 Tan Joon Seng’s Anderson Bridge, and the very vivid cyclists cycling into the painting.
许秀清 Hoi Sow Cheng surprises us with her neon colours in a delightful interpretation of the lights casting onto the Fullerton Hotel at night.
A classic scene comes to live with the crowd and shophouses in 杨李居 Jong Lee Kee’s Chinatown, a favourite plein-air painting spot for many local artists.
王雅瑞 Joseph Wong Ah Sooi’s Tanjong Pagar feels like a scene from a jazz musical, with the building and the pedestrians as the main leads.
Bustling Little India is given a different vibe with 吴启振 Goh Khie Ching’s darker colour palette and unusual composition.
刘奕村 Wendy Low’s trademark window series shine a spotlight on the ornate beauty of the Peranakan houses in Joo Chiat, exquisite and elegant.
The teh tarik coffeeshop where we chill #sg style, in 翁茂泉 Eng Mong Chua’s colourful and cheerful depiction of day-to-day life in Singapore.
Last but not least, 陈加敬 Alfred Tan Kia Keng’s minimalist view of Cavenagh Bridge, soothing and serene, peaceful and full of possibilities.
These 10 artists paint plein-air together almost every Sunday, at various locations around Singapore. They enjoy capturing scenes of Singapore on paper, they love expressing their emotions in watercolour.
Each artist has three or four paintings on exhibit, allowing us to have a sense of the artist’s style. The 38 works put together help us to notice each artist’s uniqueness and realize that there are different ways of painting and many ways of seeing.
Art is exactly this. It expands our mind, opens ourselves to possibilities and sparks our imagination.
Do visit 0211 regularly because new exhibitions will be held frequently, and let art work its magic on you!
"0211 in Watercolour 水彩画展" art exhibition runs from 15 to 21 August 2024 at 0211 High Street Centre, in Singapore.
